Tips To Help Keep Your Skin Healthy While Washing Your Hands Often


Wash with warm water

It’s important that you remember to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water. An easy way to remember this is to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ twice in your head since thats roughly the time it should take. Make sure you cover your palms, back of your hands, fingers, between fingers, and fingernails. Lukewarm water is suggested and plenty of soap.

Use moisturizing soap

Many soaps can strip the skin leaving it dry and cracked. It’s important, especially since we are all washing more frequently, to get a soap that moisturizes as well. If you can, try to avoid bar soap as its more harsh because of a higher pH.

Apply moisturizer

When water isn’t sealed into the skin after washing, it can dry out your hand. Doctors are suggesting you use creams or ointments to help counteract this.

Moisturizers help with skin care by:

  • restoring the barrier function of the epidermis
  • providing a protective film
  • filling in the small crevices between scales
  • increasing the water content of the epidermis
  • soothing the skin
  • improving the skin’s appearance and texture

Use skin balm

For those suffering from skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis – if you find your dry skin is becoming increasingly more dry, raw, or cracked due to more washing, you may want to consider using a skin balm such as Vaseline and applying it directly onto sores or cracked areas.
